Louis van Gaal: My message to my successor at Manchester United

He did win the club’s first major honour since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013 on Saturday, overseeing a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

“I am immensely proud to have helped United win the FA Cup for the 12th time in the club’s history”, van Gaal said in a statement.

An FA Cup triumph was deemed not good enough when measured against a failure to qualify for the Champions League on the back of as season where the 20-times English champions were transformed from the great entertainers into “Boring, Boring Man United”.

Understandably, Van Gaal gave short shrift to reporters on Saturday evening when asked about the rumours, snapping: “I show you the cup”.

For a club of United’s stature that represents an embarrassing record but Neville believes Mourinho, who won three Premier League titles with Chelsea, can transform their fortunes.

United’s inability to produce the free-flowing football that characterised Ferguson’s trophy-laden reign at Old Trafford has been Van Gaal’s biggest failing.

“Louis van Gaal is to leave Manchester United, with immediate effect”, United said in a statement.

Now it seems that Mourinho is one step closer to United with LVG’s sacking.

Regularly clashing with referees and the media, Mourinho also fell out with former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro, who pursued legal action against him and the club, while Stamford Bridge technical director Michael Emenalo said there was “palpable discord” between the manager and his squad towards the end of his second spell. Nevertheless, the key fact remains that under his rule, United have once again surrendered their place in the Champions League and his insipid style of football was not becoming of a club with United’s history.

United finished fifth in the Premier League this past season and qualified for the Europa League, a disappointing outcome for the ambitious three-time European champions and their American owners.

Mourinho’s appointment is expected to be confirmed after the 53-year-old Portuguese meets with senior United officials on Tuesday.

Sunday’s papers were all agreed that Jose Mourinho will replace the Dutchman as United manager, with the Sunday Times claiming “a deal with Mourinho was agreed in principle before this weekend’s match”.

Louis van Gaal is disappointed he has been fired by Manchester United and insists the “foundations are firmly in place” for a successful future at the club. United had won eight to Chelsea’s four, had scored more goals and let in less than half of Chelsea’s total.

A flash report from BBC just announced that van Gaal is officially sacked by Red Devils’ management and that Mourinho is on his way to replace him as chief bench tactician at the Old Trafford in the next few days.
