North Carolina wins men’s NCAA lacrosse title

The Terrapins have been the nation’s top team all season, but face a hot UNC team that enters the lacrosse title game with little pressure after already exceeding expectations. There certainly isn’t within the most major professional and collegiate sports leagues. By any measure outside of titles, the Terrapins are the singular dominant program in the entire sport. It’s about what level you’re playing and maximizing what you have….

North Carolina led 14-6 at halftime, but the Greyhounds scored the first four of the second in 5:19. “Luckily, I was able to steal a couple today”, Balkam said.

For the first time in 16 years, unrelenting rain Monday washed out a full day of play at the only Grand Slam tennis venue without a retractable roof over its show court, clogging the schedule with unfinished and postponed matches and prompting the frustrated tournament director to plead – again – for a roof as soon as possible.

“Dylan Molloy is the toughest guy I know who’s ever put on a lacrosse helmet”, Tiffany said.

I’m glad we can get together and do this every year.

“It’s been exciting to be part of this team”, Spencer said.

And that’s really what defines them: a handsome indifference that culminated in their first national championship in 25 years.

Getting past Maryland won’t be easy, with or without Molloy.

The Terrapins have been lauded all season for their balance, and it was on display in their 15-14 overtime win over Brown as nine players scored goals.

“I’m thinking shoot it as hard as you can to that low corner”. “There was no question as to what was going to happen”. They were supposed to be content with just making it to Philadelphia. “The challenge for our defense is can we maintain a razor-sharp focus for a minute-and-a-half at a time?” The Tar Heels specialized in drama this season, winning 7 of 9 one-goal games. The Tar Heels, which had handed Maryland’s senior class two of those three losses in the past four years, had blown a second half lead in the same stadium a year ago and ultimately watched Maryland celebrate at midfield.

No last-second heroics were needed this Memorial Day weekend.

Balkam’s save with 3:26 left in the overtime period helped kill Maryland’s man-up penalty and gave the Tar Heels the ball back with a chance to win it. Cloutier did the rest. UNC won it all in 2013.

Maryland tied the score at 4-4, and from there the game was back and forth the rest of the afternoon. The offense was a bit stagnant.

“What can you say, we’re not happy”, Mullen said.

And the Nittany Lions had one more run in them.

SERIES HISTORY VS. UNC • Maryland is 42-24 all-time against the Tar Heels, including a 2-1 record in NCAA Tournament action. Ward made a save in the closing seconds to preserve the two-goal lead at the break. But there are other signs that this might be a Carolina weekend.

“What better time to stop than on man-down in overtime to win the national championship?” Steve Pontrello finished his career with two goals and one assist. I never felt like she was not where she needed to be even back in February. “I did see him as a guy we’d hoped to settle in at the offensive end”. We played our scheme to a T. We got an outside shot. “The game has certainly slowed down for Pat as the season has progressed”.

There was more. After Carolina killed the penalty, the Tar Heels almost won the game quickly.

Maryland’s 16-game winning streak came to an end and several seniors had played their final collegiate game.

Using layups, floaters and putbacks – then, finally, three very timely 3s from Paige – the Tar Heels outmuscled Syracuse 83-66 on Saturday to move a win away from the program’s sixth national title.
