“She is showing the softer side” of Trump, said Chris Herrod, state director for Ted Cruz in Utah. The real-estate mogul formally accepted the Republican nomination for president the night before. “I’m not going to get into criticizing or attacking Donald Trump, but I’ll give you this response: I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”. In the meantime, Trump attacked the ethics of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton without playing the role of judge, jury and executioner himself. He blamed her for the rise of Islamic State militants and blasted her willingness to accept thousands of Syrian refugees.
When Trump was asked about child care late past year by a member of the women’s policy organization Make It Work, he mocked the questioner: “It’s a big subject, darling”, he said. He then proclaimed that “I am your voice” to the American people.
“He should have done it”, Trump said, suggesting that doing so would have set up the Texan better for a potential presidential run later. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told CNN that he “totally” disagrees with Trump’s suggestion that USA support could be conditional.
Basking in the glow of victory, Trump dismissed Cruz’s opposition in his remarks to volunteers and said he wouldn’t accept the Texan’s endorsement in any event.
“The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end”, he said.
The property billionaire highlighted recent instances of civil unrest in the USA, and the shootings of police officers, and confidently predicted that “safety would be restored” when he became president. “This will all change when I take office”. Donald Trump can’t even accurately quote the National Enquirer.
Perhaps it seems a bit surprising to hear the RNC crowd enthusiastically cheering for employment rights for new moms – although it shouldn’t be, given that the American public broadly supports paid family and medical leave policies.
In his convention acceptance speech, Trump painted a dire portrait of a nation wracked by crime and people who have given up work.
Cruz spoke during prime time on Wednesday night at the convention, but did not endorse Trump.
Trump will present himself as someone who can solve problems that have proved hard over the decades. “So far, I think he’s done a good job and over the next four months I think you’ll see the party coalesce”, said Makan Delrahim, a California delegate.
The prevailing narrative at the Cleveland convention has not been about Trump’s positions, but dominated instead by the failure of he party’s various factions to unite behind Trump. If Trump is elected, we’ll know.
Trump’s promised wall between Mexico and the US was a major part of his speech. Trump concluded his speech with the promise he has made the slogan of his campaign: “We will make America great again”.
He still professes to believe that Trump will make an adequate head of state.
LISA DESJARDINS: But much of the day was dominated by what happened last night, when Trump’s primary challenger, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, balked at endorsing the nominee.
Trump said the USA would work with Israel to destroy the “barbarians of ISIS”, and vowed to end what he called “policy of nation-building and regime change”, saying that “instead we must work with all of our allies who share the goal of destroying ISIS and Islamic terrorism”.
