U.S. election: Bernie Sanders to urge Democratic Party unity

“Everyone kind of knew but that doesn’t mean it will change now that it’s proven'” she said.

“They throw “party unity” around as if we’re supposed to jump for joy when they mention her name”, said Manuel Zapata, a Sanders delegate from California, referring to Clinton.

Outgoing Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz spoke through unceasing crowd noise and jeers at a delegate breakfast for her state Monday morning, spinning the tremendous “interest” in her remarks into a plug for Florida.

Many of those e-mails suggested what Sanders’ supporters suspected – that the DNC had tilted toward Clinton during the primaries. Washerman Schultz announced Sunday that she would be resigning after the convention because of leaked emails showing that she and DNC staff may have extended preferential treatment to Hillary Clinton’s campaign during the primary.

Luis Miranda, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said on Twitter that party Vice Chairwoman Donna Brazile, a longtime Democratic leader and operative, will serve as interim chair through the election.

The four-day convention will conclude the nomination process and Ms. Clinton will make her acceptance speech on Thursday.

Mr. Sanders – increasingly concerned by the rise of Mr. Trump – is expected to offer Ms. Clinton a full-throated endorsement, but the frayed tempers of his supporters may not be easily soothed.

Seeking to avoid a televised display of disunity, Bernie Sanders on Monday urged supporters to line up behind Democrat Hillary Clinton and claimed victory in deposing and sidelining a top party official. Bernie Sanders’ presidential bid.

On Sunday, many of them marched through Philadelphia to show their support for Mr Sanders and their disdain for Mrs Clinton. “Even Bernie Sanders…. Look, I don’t agree with Hillary Clinton on everything, but I’ve been supporting her for a while because perfection is a standard I can only find in my wife”.

Speaking to his convention delegates, just hours before the Democrats opened a convention to nominate his primary rival, the Vermont senator tried to settle roiling tensions between his supporters and the party rank-and-file lining up behind Clinton.

But Wasserman Schulz’s plans to open the convention Monday afternoon – risking more boos on live television – raised the possibility of further drama. Others at the meeting cheered and clapped for Wasserman Schultz, who is stepping down over the email controversy. He said the Sanders campaign had not contacted his group to encourage them to not protest.

This downgrade in her role comes after the leak of internal Democratic National Committee emails in which staffers were reportedly brainstorming ways to work against Sen.

The drama is unsettling for Democrats, who gleefully watched the GOP’s convention last week suffer through the same type of divisions, and who’d hoped to escape it themselves.

“It’s very easy to say, here’s a problem, I can fix it”, Reed said.

“We will meet the return of Russian belligerence with the same resolve that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union”, the Republican platform says.

Her announcement that she was leaving had pro-Sanders supporters cheering during a demonstration in Philadelphia and Donald Trump and other Republicans crowing about the disarray among the Democrats.
