Olympics: Stanford’s Simone Manuel and Michael Phelps make history

We’re not an unusual African-American family.

U.S. Swimming had hoped to close Rio’s Summer Games with a bang, to match the stellar performances they’ve had in what could be Phelps’ last Olympics ever. Pools were seldom built in black community areas.

Stanford junior Simone Manuel had a look of disbelief. “The title “black swimmer” makes it seem like I am not supposed to be able to win a gold medal, I am not supposed to be able to break records”.
