Cowboys Lucky Whitehead Runs Back Opening Kickoff for Touchdown

It appears that rookie fourth-round pick Dak Prescott has this thing handled.

Lucky Whitehead returned the opening kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown to give Dallas the lead before numerous 89,140 fans – the largest to ever see a preseason National Football League game in the US – even had settled into their seats at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Rookie QB Dak Prescott, who is viewed as Tony Romo’s eventual successor, had a great first preseason game. Romo and Witten have not played in a preseason opener since 2012. The Rams would respond with a rushing touchdown from Benny Cunningham to cut the lead to 14-7, but Prescott would then hit Terrance Williams for a second-quarter touchdown and the Cowboys would go into the half with a 24-7 lead.

The Cowboys went from likely having to punt to seeing Dan Bailey connect on a 44-yard field goal. Even though it is just a preseason game, I am sure some bad blood still exists between these teams. Jameill Showers made a really awesome play but nobody stepped up to help him cash in and that was disappointing.

Allowing Lucky Whitehead’s 101-yard touchdown return on the opening kickoff was a memorable way to open the Rams’ second tenure in Los Angeles. Though the Bills did recently sign Tyrod Taylor to a six-year contract extension, it’s probably comforting to know that Jones appears capable of leading an offense. Jones and Swaim have the talent to make the Cowboys roster, and they still probably will, despite the easy drops. They had 35 pass plays of 20 or more yards, which is little more than two per game, and that was dead last among the NFL’s 32.

“I did all right”, Prescott said.

“It was another opportunity to prove to my teammates and my coaches and this organization the player and person I am”, Prescott said. He didn’t panic under pressure, didn’t telegraph his throws and didn’t have blinders on that we saw from Brandon Weeden previous year that drove Cowboys fans nuts. Quick passes had the defense lost and corner Coty Sensabaugh was no match for star receiver Dez Bryant. “What he and Tyler (Higbee) did was a continuation of what we’ve been doing in camp”. Dak was delivering the ball to everyone. A lot to learn from in that tape. During his first series, on his second pass attempt Goff was intercepted by Cowboys linebacker Mark Nzeocha.

So, we tell our players run faster, don’t get blocked in the back and separate blocks and don’t get held.

Prescott’s performance is good stuff as he easily outplayed Rams No. 1 overall pick, Jared Goff. It was the Rams’ first home game in L.A. since the end of the 1994 season. On the touchdown pass, Prescott threw another back-shoulder fade that only Bryant could catch.

With five seconds remaining and the Seahawks trailing by seven, undrafted rookie Trevone Boykin uncorked a deep pass to receiver Tanner McEvoy in the end zone.

However, the Cowboys were backed up by penalties. “It was cover-2 and I got in between”.

He showed poise and made good decisions. They spoke with the Cleveland Browns about Josh McCown, but the asking price was too high.

Maybe not the backup job either. “It”™s like he”™s been here before. He’s not playing like a rookie.
