Lenawee County reports its 1st travel-related case of the Zika virus

Officials are looking into the possibility that the Pinellas County resident was infected with the virus in a neighboring county. The projections will be updated and refined every couple of weeks based on new data, including confirmed cases of local transmission, he said.

Almost 400 non-travel-related Zika infections will occur in Florida before the end of the summer, according to new projections by biostatisticians at the University of Florida and other institutions.

The current Zika outbreak was first detected a year ago in Brazil, where the virus has been linked to more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly, which can cause severe developmental problems.

“As a result, the Zika virus has gained a foothold in Miami, and 183 people have already been infected in the city – infections that may have been preventable”, she said, using a number that includes travel-related cases from people infected overseas.

Scott made some of the same complaints about the CDC last week, including the request for 10,000 Zika Prevention Kits.

Officials continue to struggle with controlling mosquitos in the Wynwood area of Miami, Frieden said. Many of these were brought into the United States by travelers, but local transmission is underway in Florida.

Five new non-travel related cases were announced Tuesday, including four in Miami-Dade and one in Pinellas County.

“These are individual instances, and do not represent spread throughout the area”, Frieden said.

As of noon Tuesday, the Department of Health had not posted a daily update about the overall numbers of Zika cases in Florida. “Hopefully something good will happen and it will just be a single case”. Because of a lack of data, the number of actual cases of local transmission could be somewhat lower or a lot higher, but would not constitute a widespread epidemic even in the worst scenario. “That’s what we would anticipate seeing here”.

In the short term, the U.S. Congress should make Zika funding its priority next month, following its recess.

Should not travel to any area with Zika. Those cases include three patients each in Pinellas, Polk and Orange counties, two in Broward and one each in Manatee, Pasco and Volusia counties. A resident of that state who visited Miami recently has tested positive for the virus, state health officials said in a statement.

Doctors also can not yet say what percentage of women infected with Zika will have a baby with birth defects. Current CDC research suggests that Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is strongly associated with Zika; however, only a small proportion of people with recent Zika virus infection get GBS.

Levine and her colleagues pointed out that they have released the images to provide doctors with a better understanding on what signs to search for in the brains of fetuses and newly born babies that have been affected by the Zika virus.

Mrs. Clinton said a rainy-day fund is needed in an increasingly globalized world, where diseases like Ebola, bird flu and SARS can easily hop borders and threaten the U.S. The sole exceptions are cases that are sexually transmitted, but Zika patients are generally warned to avoid transmission by either using condoms, or remaining abstinent.

Brazil has now reported more than 8,000 cases of microcephaly and confirmed that women were infected with Zika in more than 1,600 of them. For more information on how to prevent mosquito bites, visit Miami-Dade County’s Mosquito Control website: www.miamidade.gov/solidwaste/mosquito-control.asp.
