Meet GoPro’s First Drone, the Karma

GoPro has officially announced its long-awaited Hero5 action camera – and it comes in two different models. The Session is an update of its smallest camera, which it first introduced last summer to tepid sales.

GoPro launched a new line of products including the all new GoPro Hero 5 and Hero 5 Session during a live-stream on Facebook on Monday morning at Squaw Valley Resort in California. Both new cameras will work with all existing attachments.

The drone + gimbal + controller + carrying pack runs $800, or $1000 or $1100 in bundles with the Hero5 Session or Black respectively. Thus, the Hero 4 Black could grab 4K video at 30fps and 1080p footage at 60 frames but lacked a touch screen and the Silver version only managed 2K footage but did offer a cool and nicely sized touch display for much easier recording control.

Other features of the Hero5 Black include manual exposure control and Global Positioning System, which notes where snapshots and video are recorded. It will be available as of October 2nd, priced at US$399.99.

GoPro made its biggest product announcement to date on September 19, with the reveal of the highly anticipated Karma drone and the next-generation of the Hero camera, the Hero5. Its stock has tumbled 17 percent in the past year through last week and is down nearly 85 percent from its October 2014 high.

GoPro’s new cloud software. With increasing competition from other tech companies, GoPro has had trouble convincing Wall Street that it can continue attracting consumers to its cameras. “HERO5’s ability to auto-upload photos and videos to a GoPro Plus account dramatically simplifies mobile, on-the-go editing, sharing and enjoyment”.

If it seems like a long time ago that GoPro were first teasing their drone project, well, it kind of was.

Details are a little scarce on the performance of the Karma drone for now, but it looks like it will be somewhere around DJI’s older Phantom 3 lineup. And about that Karma: does $799, remote, backpack case, and gimbal handgrip included get you excited?

You can watch GoPro launch the Karma (and hopefully Hero 5) by heading to this Facebook page, and you should also be able to tune in on the main website. It’s also competing against smartphones, which have steadily improved their image and video quality, and become more durable. With a new voice control feature, the Hero5 Black also features a new power button setting allows a single-press, simultaneous power on and record function so you’re always ready.

The Karma device is relatively compact and, yes, folds into a backpack. There’s also an image-stabilization grip that can be handheld or mounted to vehicles or gear.

Woodman didn’t spend much time differentiating the drone’s capabilities from what’s already in the market during his 30-minute rapid-fire presentation. Shenzhen-based DJI has been developing its drones for nearly a decade, and its most advanced quadcopters are featured in Apple’s stores and websites. The company is covered by 9 Wall Street Brokerage Firms. The GoPro Karma takes on the brand’s natural identity of being the flawless companion for those looking to record life’s insane adventures.
