Second down: Browns lose another starting QB as McCown out

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kessler will reportedly start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, as Browns veteran quarterback Josh McCown is now dealing with a shoulder injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Sunday, McCown started against the Baltimore Ravens in the 25-20 loss.

McCown, filling in for Robert Griffin III who broke a shoulder bone in last week’s opener, threw a pair of TD passes to rookie Corey Coleman and Isaiah Crowell had an 85-yard touchdown run for the Browns. And in Week Three, the Browns’ starting quarterback will be rookie Cody Kessler.

“Obviously, he is the next guy up”, Jackson said of Kessler, a four-year starter at USC who struggled during training camp and the exhibition season.

Cam Erving, the Browns’ embattled second-year center, was injured with 55 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter while blocking for running back Duke Johnson after Johnson caught a swing pass from McCown.

Down at least 3 Starters: After having all 53 players on the roster healthy last week, the Browns suffered some injuries that will cause them to miss at least three starters this week. Do you want to play that kind of game in September? He said the 37-year-old will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. Erving spent Sunday night in the hospital and will miss several games. “We will see. My mindset is that everything will be alright and we will move ahead business as usual”.

“I think it’s been awesome, because Hue’s trusted me through this whole process”, Kessler said in the locker room.

“It’s just not wanting to not be out there with your guys, ” McCown said, his eyes red and ready to brim over.

McCown played the entire game against the Ravens, but Kessler said afterward he would have been ready to go in if called upon. I understand what you’re saying, but something’s going to come from it.

“I don’t know if it’ll stunt his growth. I know this much: we will do anything and everything we need to do on offense to fill a team and a unit that can go out there and play”. McCown was 20-for-33 for 260 yards, two TD passes, two interceptions and an 80.4 rating.

This was not part of the plan during the offseason, when Cleveland’s new front office passed on a chance to take one of the top quarterbacks in the draft and chose to sign Griffin, who flamed out in Washington. “This is pro football.I’ve been toughened before.if this was Week 14 and this was going on.but it’s early”.

But even if McCown returns to wage more Monty Python sword fights, the bigger question will be whether this organization and this head coach have a credible plan at quarterback and whether they can be trusted to fix the position once and for all.

Here are some other things we learned as Baltimore improved to 15-2 against Cleveland under coach John Harbaugh.

“Well, you’re going to trust me this weekend”, he said. Nassib will undergo surgery, but Jackson said it’s possible the former Penn State standout may be able to play in the future with a protective cast. The Browns could also sign a veteran to fill in while Griffin and McCown are sidelined.
