(AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis). As Georgia hopes to make a comeback for the third time this season, here are three observations from the first half as Kirby Smart’s team must make plenty of improvement.
The Tide responded with a four-play, 75 yard drive, highlighted by a 67-yard run by Damien Harris, that was capped by a one-yard TD plunge by Bo Scarborough that gave Alabama a 34-27 lead. The drive stalled on 4th and 8 at the Ole Miss 30 as Georgia failed to convert as Eason’s pass to the endzone was incomplete to McKenzie.
Mississippi: Yes, the Rebels are 1-2, but they could easily be 3-0.
Ole Miss linebacker Detric Bing-Dukes: The former Georgia linebaker and fullback, who transferred to Iowa Western Community College before enrolling at MS, had a strong day defensively. He left humbled 45-14 by No. 23 Ole Miss. It was freshman Brian Herrien, however, who led the team in rushing with 11 attempts for 78 yards and the only two touchdowns the ‘Dawgs scored.
Whether the Rebels’ dominant 45-14 win over No. 12 Georgia Saturday turns out to be an election foreshadowing remains to be seen. He will be one of the key factors for Georgia to win this game against Ole Miss.
Nick Chubb, Running Back: Obviously the 5-10, 230 pound running back is a staple in the fabric of College Football. The Georgia running game could not get anything going, besides late in the second half when the Rebels started putting in their backups.
Unlike this season’s games against Florida State and Alabama when Ole Miss blew 21-point leads, the Rebels were able to exploit Georgia’s defense racking up 510 total yards.
“It is going to be another great challenge for us”, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said. Engram’s long was a 37-yard reception on a wide receiver pass from Markell Pack.
“When we get in a rhythm, it’s hard for people to stop us”, Engram said. John Youngblood picked up the loose ball and raced 44 yards for the touchdown to give Ole Miss a 24-3 lead with 2:47 to go in the half. Jacob Eason threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns in 29-for-55 passes. The Rebels defense has yet to pick a ball off, but if we do rattle Eason, he could make some mistakes. “We’ve played a lot of young kids that have to grow up and understand the value of each play in the course of a game”. “They will have to grow up”.
After rushing for 222 yards in the opener, Chubb has fallen short in each of the past two games.
While there are a few encouraging signs for the future, Georgia, on the whole, looked pitiful against the Rebels. He finished the game 18 for 24 for 282 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and 53 yards and another score on the ground. However, the most exciting game this week, with lots of National Football League draft implications no doubt, is Georgia v. Chad Kelly can tuck it and chuck it, though I’d certainly not call great at either one. It’s as if they play with the fast-forward button stuck. The Bulldogs are competing for their third offensive line coach in as many seasons – Will Friend (2014), Rob Sale (2015) and now Sam Pittman. This is a squad that helped keep Florida State preseason Heisman Trophy candidate, Dalvin Cook to under 100 yards in the Rebel’s first loss of the year.
Ole Miss’ season could look a lot different right now if not for a pair of blown leads.
Georgia: The Bulldogs probably tumble in the rankings after being outplayed in pretty much all aspects of the game. Likewise, Heavy likes Ole Miss to win the game but expects a close contest.
Georgia: The Bulldogs host Tennessee next week in an SEC Eastern Division showdown.
New on campus is the expansion of the Ole Miss’ athletic facilities bringing the Rebels up to date with the competition in the Southeastern Conference.
