Wentz keeps Eagles unbeaten, shreds Steelers

In the past two games he has had 20 runs of 1 yard or fewer. The second overall selection of the 2016 draft outplayed Steelers’ All-Pro quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who completed 24 of 44 passes for 259 yards and an interception.

That’s because the Eagles thoroughly dismantled the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-3 as Wentz once again showed poise way beyond his rookie status.

After the 34-3 blowout over the Pittsburgh Steelers, this Eagles team should be taken seriously. Rookies need time to adjust.Safety Malcolm Jenkins conceded it was only natural to expect quarterback Carson Wentz to endure some ups and downs.”There are just things you haven’t seen and you make mistakes”, Jenkins said.

Sproles caught 6 passes for 128 yards, including an electrifying 73-yard touchdown reception from Carson Wentz.

“Everyone has confidence and high expectations for themselves”, Wentz said.

“That’s not how we play”, Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey said.

At 3-0, the Eagles head into their bye week in sole possession of first place in the NFC East.

These all might make for decent jokes, but the joke’s on all of us with the Rams improving to 2-1 following a cross-country trip to the Bucs in which the offense actually produced 30 points – after not finding the end zone in Weeks 1-2 – and the defense continued to play well. Pittsburgh entered with a 2-0 record and Super Bowl ambitions. But Wentz is no ordinary rookie.

Philadelphia has longed for this for so many years its surge of enthusiasm for Wentz could become suffocating, as well.

But did he envision this unprecedented start three weeks ago when Sam Bradford (who is also undefeated this year) was traded to Minnesota?

Antonio Brown had 140 receiving yards, but 85 of them were in the second half when the game was out of reach.

“I thought B.J. came in and did some really good things”, Roethlisberger said. And away they went.

It was the worst loss for the Steelers under Mike Tomlin and the worst by any Steelers team since 1989. It was a poor performance by us, and I mean all of us. “It starts with me”. We were highly penalized.

“When they do that, it kind of gets everyone off their job when he extends the play like that”, Davis said.

In the third quarter, the Eagles broke the game open.

The Eagles were leading 13-3 in the third quarter when Wentz connected with Sproles.

Wentz tossed a touchdown pass to Matthews on the next possession to make it 10-0. This one, highlighted by Wentz’s screen pass to Sproles that went for 40 yards down to the Steelers’ 14, ended in a Caleb Sturgis 29-yard field goal. The Steelers, already hit hard by injuries, lost two LBs on Sunday – Ryan Shazier (knee) and Lawrence Timmons (shin). He returned to the locker room after the game with a huge bandage on his shin. Robert Golden suffered a hamstring injury which had him out of the game early in the first half. Despite the success they found in the first two games of the season, many discredited the Eagles due to their opponents.

Ben Roethlisberger threw for 257 yards, but he was sacked four times and picked off once (it could have easily been four). Fletcher Cox had a pair of sacks while Brandon Graham and Bennie Logan had one each. He then found running back Darren Sproles running down the sideline.

The rookie quarterback dropped back on third-and-8, saw his first read covered, sidestepped a rusher, stepped up in the pocket, started to scramble, pump-faked, rolled to his right, stopped short of the line of scrimmage and floated a flawless pass down the right side to Darren Sproles. Still, it was the Steelers’ ninth loss in a row at Philadelphia, a stretch dating back to 1965. They averaged a combined 4.84 yards a carry. Smallwood led the Eagles with 79 yards rushing on 17 carries.

ANTHEM PROTEST: Jenkins and CB Ron Brooks were the only players to raise their fists during the national anthem.
