Ryder Cup win begs question: Does US still need task force?

Martin Kaymer, the man who holed the winning putt to round off the “Miracle of Medinah” in the previous Ryder Cup to be played on American soil, managed just a solitary point from four matches this time around and that was gained after Europe had given up the trophy.

World number three Rory McIlroy and playing partner Thomas Pieters were two of the best performers for the European squad which featured six rookies.

As with all captains, Clarke also had to put in his pairings for Saturday’s second session while the first was ongoing, with Rafa Cabrera Bello therefore left out of the fourballs after he and Sergio Garcia had recovered from four down with six to play to halve their match with Reed and Jordan Spieth.

Arnold Palmer did not live to see the 41st Ryder Cup, but USA captain Davis Love said he was still looking out for the Americans in Sunday’s 17-11 victory over Europe.

While Europe has dominated lately, the U.S. now owns a 26-13-2 lead in the overall rivalry, winning 18 while losing only three with one drawn from 1927 to 1977 when facing only a British-Irish squad.

Rory McIlroy vowed that European golf fans will not retaliate in 2018 for the verbal abuse unleashed upon Europe players by USA fans this week at the Ryder Cup. “I would have loved to have rested them all once but it just didn’t quite happen”.

“Being a part of the team – didn’t actually hit a golf shot, but to go out there and be with these guys, we are truly a team”, Woods said.

Winning point: Ryan Moore was conceded a tap-in par putt on the 18th hole for a 1-up victory over Lee Westwood that gave the Americans the 14 1/2 points they needed.

“We can’t thank Phil enough”, Snedeker said.

Jack Nicklaus, the 18-time major victor who was Palmer’s long-time rival, opened the Ryder Cup on Thursday by saying, “We all feel his loss and we dedicate these games to his honor”. “We’re looking forward to going to Paris and trying to win one over there”. To that end, Reed found himself paired in singles play against Rory McIlroy, the newly-crowned FedEx Cup champion.

When Reed responded by sinking his own birdie from 20 feet, he pulled the ball out of the cup and turned to face McIlroy, then wagged his index finger in a show of defiance.

“Some of the new blood that we have, they have gotten over their first Ryder Cup and now they know what it is about”.

McIlroy says he and Pieters were never meant to play foursomes, never practiced together and even flipped to see who would tee off on which holes. The last one went to Moore, who was added to the team only last Sunday.

Golf: The United States have honoured the late Arnold Palmer, by claiming their first Ryder Cup in eight years.

When asked to sum up his first Ryder Cup, Willett said: “S***”.

“There is not much more I could have done”.

“I’m sure with the amount of talent that we have coming through on The European Tour, there will be some of the French guys coming through”.

“That’s my cue to shut up”, Mickelson said.

Rose took two points from five matches in Minnesota but looked on course to beat Rickie Fowler in his singles clash before going down one-up to the Californian. His strategy sent shivers through the partisan crowds when no US player in the first five matches held a lead after the first nine holes.
