Beckham, with the Giants facing a fourth-and-1 with 1:36 left against the Baltimore Ravens, caught a simple slant pass and took it in for a 66-yard touchdown to turn a Giants’ 23-20 deficit into a 27-23 lead, one that held up for NY.
In the process, Manning surpassed John Elway for the seventh-most touchdown passes in National Football League history with 302, joining Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Dan Marino and Fran Tarkenton as the only quarterbacks to accomplish the feat.
And Manning had a lot to do with the 66-yard game-winning catch-and-run by Beckham, beyond hitting him in stride 90 seconds to play. The offense had an opportunity to pull out a win, even while lacking urgency on the final drive, but Flacco was unable to find the game winning play at the end.
After the game, the normally soft-spoken Rodgers-Cromartie was about as animated as he’s ever been since joining the Giants in 2014 as he spoke about that controversial call against him. “You tell me?” wide receiver Victor Cruz said.
“I sat there and just prayed”. The Giants and Jets have played in the same facility for more than three decades.
“I never argue calls anymore because it gets heated and then you get another call”.
“We need to keep our focus on the ballgame”, he said.
What made the performance even better was that Beckham had to leave the field in the second quarter with a hip pointer. Valiant effort by the offense, but failing to convert on Terrance West’s 33-yard run and Mike Wallace’s 70-yard catch proved fatal.
Young and Wright primarily took up outside roles with Davis and Powers handling slot duties against Manning (32-for-46, 403 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, one sack, 100.2 rating), who historically had posted the worst numbers of his career against the Ravens.
One week later, after finding the end zone for the first time, Beckham went over and shared a moment with the net, giving it a hug.
Much like it does for Manning late in the fourth quarter.
OBJ had already linked with Eli Manning for a 75-yard score in the third quarter, and the pair connected again to turn the game around.
However, Baltimore had to settle for another Tucker field goal, this one 39 yards which gave the Ravens a 13-10 lead. The Giants would take the lead on a fourth down catch-and-run by Beckham. Last week, after scoring his first touchdown, he sprinted to the sideline and “hugged it out” with the net.
As for Sunday, Joe Flacco and the Ravens had the Giants on the ropes early on, and were off to both a 10-0 lead and seemingly easy win. Not only did he break out with two touchdowns and 222 receiving yards but he and the kicking net announced their engagement.
“Yeah that was fun”, Manning said on how it felt to watch the way Beckham played. “It was an outside toss play and the fullback came up on me and he cut me”. He placed his hand of anointment on me and he did.
Ravens safety Eric Weddle said Beckham should not have gotten inside on the quick cross from right to left. It was an elongated celebration that would’ve made you think the game was over, except there was still 1:24 left.
The New York Giants receiver curbed his emotions for the most part, avoided any extracurricular activity with his opponents and went out and simply played football against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
Ron Fritz, sports editor: This is a game the Ravens deserved to lose. We man guys up. “I just knew today we were going to win, we were going to battle”. “We are 3 and 3 in tight games”.
As for the Giants, they initially couldn’t deal with an aggressive, swarming third-ranked Ravens defense that didn’t allow the hosts to get outside their own 27-yard line on their first three possessions.
Peter Schmuck, columnist: The Ravens looked like they were going to blow out the struggling Giants out in the first quarter, but the game ended with them facing more uncertainty than before John Harbaugh changed offensive coordinators.
