National Football League sees ties in consecutive weeks for first time since 1997

The Bengals forced Washington to punt on their first possession in overtime.

After a string of underwhelming games in recent years, Wembley finally played host to a genuinely fun back-and-forth contest between two potential contenders.

“I was mad too, like him”, Pogba said of that result.

For the first time in almost two decades, a National Football League game has concluded with a tie for two consecutive weeks after the Washington Redskins and Cincinnati Bengals battled to a 27-27 standstill in London on Sunday. Cousins took a three-yard loss on second down to center the ball for Hopkins, and the kicker made the attempt – only to find out Bengals coach Marvin Lewis had called timeout. Playing in the suddenly tough NFC East, not having a win and instead having a tie puts them at a disadvantage entering the second half of the season. On the next drive, Dalton fumbled while attempting a quarterback sneak, and the ball was recovered by Washington rookie Anthony Lanier with a minute left in overtime. I know there was a tie last week in Arizona, but I was like, ‘How the heck did they tie?’ Now we know. “We’ve just got to.I, me, myself, I’m just going to try and take the positives out of the game and move forward”.

In a game where both teams were afraid to win, in the end, neither of them did.

The fifth was a blatant pass interference on a deep ball to Green, who went ahead and made the catch anyway. He did throw one interception to Will Compton on a drive that was otherwise looking pretty good. The Redskins tight end cut back toward the middle and dived in to the end zone to complete the 23-yard scoring play. Both teams are making their first appearance at Wembley Stadium, but Redskins fans in team jerseys appear to outnumber their Bengal-striped counterparts by at least 5 to 1 in the sold-out stands. Washington thrived early, with Kirk Cousins marching the offense confidently down the field on the opening drive, before Robert Kelley crossed on a 3-yard touchdown run. It was the first National Football League rushing touchdown for Kelley, an undrafted rookie from Tulane starting in place of an injured Matt Jones.

If it weren’t for a miss from kicker Mike Nugent, the Bengals could have won in regulation. Nugent has often struggled from long range throughout his 12-year career. Most of his catches came on underneath coverage, so he ended up with a respectable grade for his efforts this week (73.2).

In overtime, Hopkins’ 34-yard game ending field goal attempt went wide to the left. “We can’t have turnovers, the turnovers we had today offensively, penalties on defence, we miss a PAT, we miss a field goal”.

After being flagged five times for hands to the face against the Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman was not happy with the officiating.

And then there was Josh Shaw’s shoe-string tackle of Reed in the waning moments of the first half, which held the star tight end to a six-yard gain on third and seven. The Bengals’ defense has allowed touchdowns on its opponents’ first drives in four of eight games.

RUNNING FREE: The Redskins’ ground game ain’t broken without leading rusher Matt Jones, sidelined Sunday with a knee injury picked up midweek.

Wasting first-half chances and falling behind has been a disturbing trend for Washington this season, but this time they had a response.
