“Although everyone’s disappointed, we played hard and went down swinging!”
Finally, McManus did go two for three, but his missed attempt in overtime was crucial to why the Broncos lost the game.
Kansas City will travel to Atlanta for a Week 13 matchup against the Falcons (7-4).
The loss put the Broncos at 7-4, third place in their division and put them out of a playoff berth.
Kansas City entered Sunday tied for fifth in the league in scoring defense, while Denver wasn’t far behind at eighth.
The victor followed a risky move by Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, who sent his kicker out for a 62-yard try with 1:01 left only to see Brandon McManus – who has hit from 70 yards in training camp – come up short. Von Miller said about the decision to kick the long field goal. “I worked and I had faith and I believed”.
A tie would have left both the Chiefs and the Broncos in the AFC’s two wild card spots. I have T.J. [Ward] and [Aqib] Talib and Chis Harris Jr. and all of these guys who are elite guys.
With five seconds remaining in the extra period, Chiefs kicker Cairo Santos made a 34-yard field goal that struck the left upright and caromed over the crossbar.
“It’s on me. I just gave him a chance, thought we could do it, but we didn’t get it done”.
Then the Chiefs were stuck settling for a field goal and appeared to take a 12-10 lead on a 35-yarder by Santos … only to see Denver flagged for an illegal defensive formation and get a first down at the Broncos’ 12.
Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston wreaked havoc on the Broncos offensive line in the first half. And lesson learned. We had a lot of mistakes, a lot of penalties, a lot of busts in coverage. We’ve got to be able to finish that game. Kansas City became the second team to average 3.6 yards per play or fewer and come away with a victory this season.
Kelce recorded multiple drops in the same game for the first time in his career, but then recovered when it mattered most with 56 yards on four catches in the Chiefs’ final three possessions.
As Norwood trudged off the field, an angry Talib shoved him toward the sideline. Even without great quarterback play and without Jeremy Maclin, Jamaal Charles, Dee Ford, Dontari Poe, Jaye Howard and Allen Bailey, the Chiefs still left Denver victorious.
Kubiak said he addressed the episode with the team and stressed that the players have to have each other’s back.
The Broncos defense looked gassed for much of the fourth quarter and overtime, being burned on long distances situations.
Kubiak went for it and got burned. “We talked about it”.
“We’re playing good team football right now and playing really good team defense”, Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter explained after Sunday’s victory.
McManus would think, “I guess coach doesn’t think I can make it from 62”.
I still would have made the same decision Kubiak did. “He’s an emotional player, everybody knows that, everybody sees that, and he wants this team to win – just as I do”. Kubiak could have gotten a little closer for McManus with positive yardage on the ground and forced the Chiefs to use their final timeout if he called a running play on third down. A 2-point failure and it’s still a seven-point cushion. “I’m anxious about Jacksonville”, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said of Sunday’s opponent.
