The Civil Rights Movement of which King was a leader ultimately not only brought an end to legal segregation, but uplifted a South held back – whites and blacks alike – by that disgraceful legacy.
Among the invitees were President Barack Obama and former presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
As demonstrators marched numerous chants referenced the recent election and President-elect Donald Trump’s actions, with many “Resist Trump” signs being waved.
The Saginaw Community Foundation was awarded with the event’s Dr. MLK Unity Award.
It also wasn’t immediately clear whether the shooting was related to the holiday honoring King.
The Dallas-Forth Worth area boasts one of the nation’s largest MLK Day parades, reports CBS Dallas.
Few people would deny King is considered a great American but the message was seen as disrespectful by fans of the slain civil rights icon.
St. Louis License Collector Mavis Thompson tried to warm up the crowd before the cold walk by saying that the civil rights movement has made progress, but is still revisited by ghosts from the past.
The theme of this year’s breakfast was “Cooperation, Acceptance, Peace & Caring”.

There will be dozens of events, concerts, and speeches throughout the city to celebrate the holiday, reports CBS New York. Volunteers were putting the finishing touches on everything early Monday.
