Derrick Walton Jr. wins point guard duel as Michigan’s ride continues

Tom Izzo was anxious his freshmen night not handle their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament so well. The Spartans have started 11 different players this season. The Spartans are even younger than Miami.

His freshmen basically told him not to worry so much. Izzo said, shaking his head. “We continue to embrace being able to play downhill, but to do it with shooters as well”. “We do the same thing”. “We’re playing against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday”. Of Michigan’s 16 second-half baskets, all but five came from 3-point range. “. We just couldn’t stop them”.

Kuran Iverson added 17 points for the Rams (25-9), who will play third-seeded OR in a second-round game Sunday for the right to go to the Sweet 16. Michigan State has fared well against the Jayhawks in recent years and that’s an intriguing matchup all around – especially because of the Josh Jackson factor.

According to William Hill Sports Books, 68 percent of the money wagered against the spread (as of 11 a.m. ET) had been on MI, along with 70 percent of the tickets.

“Defensemen, forwards getting guys out from in front of the net, letting me see the puck”, Jones said. “You just got to keep working and I wanted a shot at Kansas”.

MI closed as a 2.5-point betting favorite today against Oklahoma State in a first round game and led by four points with the final seconds quickly ticking off the clock. That’s the way the season should go.

But after trailing for the first 13 minutes, the Cardinals finally took the lead with an 8-2 late in the first half.

Winston was a huge difference for Michigan State in the open court, as his vision and ability to control tempo allowed the Spartans to get easy buckets and open looks. He embraced the 3-point shot long before it became fashionable. The Spartans’ trio of freshmen, Joshua Langford, Miles Bridges and Nick Ward, combined to score 50 points on 21-of-31 shooting.

“Everyone was just really excited to play them on neutral ice”, Goodwin said.

This feels like the one area of the game where things could get away from MI. Check back with Patch later today for updates on both of these games.

Ja’Quan Newton led UM with 16 points, Davon Reed had 12, and Bruce Brown added 11. The Cowboys haven’t won an NCAA Tourney game since 2009.

The Ducks, who led by 26 in the second half, barely covered the 15½-point spread when Iona’s Sam Cassell Jr. missed a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining. The lead grew to 23 on an Ellis layup as the Spartans were never threatened the rest of the way.

When OSU was bounced from the Big 12 Tournament, leaving it with three straight losses, there was a sense that relief would come with an opponent outside the conference, away from the likes of Kansas’ Frank Mason III and Iowa State’s Monte Morris, point guards who neutralized Evans’ impact. That showed something about their DNA and showed something about what they’ve been through. Folkes was put into the lineup after missing last Saturday’s meeting between the teams in favor of Zach Saar. That was a hell of a performance against a damn good team. We saw teams in our league that did the same thing.
