Prep star Vasturia helps spark Notre Dame’s win over Princeton

Christie is sitting a few rows behind Notre Dame’s bench Thursday in Buffalo and rooting for the Fighting Irish. “They know how to calm their team down”.

Notre Dame As Underdogs: Head coach Mike Brey’s team has been unsafe as the Vegas underdog this season. “We’ve had an unbelievable run in close games”, Brey said in the postgame news conference.

Is this a bad matchup for the Mountaineers?

10 This will be the 10th meeting between Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey and West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins. “Our guys have really believed that, because they’ve experienced it, which is huge”. His decision to take the jump shot was curious.

No. 4 seed West Virginia (27-8) vs. #14 Northeastern battled Notre Dame down to the wire with the Irish holding on for the 69-65 victory.

No. 7 St. Mary’s (Calif.) 85, No. 10 VCU 77: Jock Landale had 18 points and 13 rebounds as seventh-seeded Saint Mary’s held on for an 85-77 victory over No. 10 Virginia Commonwealth in the opening round of the NCAA tournament’s West Region on Thursday night. The Fighting Irish led the ACC in turnovers, giving up just nine per game.

“I’m always looking to get them the ball”, Farrell said. “They played well enough for us to win, that’s all that matters”. “We just stole wins to get to the Elite Eight”.

In the last 5 minutes of the Princeton game, the Irish could have really helped themselves extend the lead and put Princeton away by hitting foul shots.

“West Virginia has more strength and quickness”, he said. Following the minor scare, Colson only made one more jump shot the rest of the game, despite finishing with 29 points. The Irish turned it over 18 times.

That’s how Notre Dame operates in March.

Notre Dame has three other players averaging double figures: VJ Beachem (14.7 ppg.), Matt Farrell (14.2 ppg.) and Steve Vasturia (13.2 ppg.). Carter isn’t a superb half-court defender, meaning Farrell should have an easy time getting into the lane and finding shooters.

“There’s a little bit more difference toward the end of the game”, Adrian said. You’ve got to move on quick. “I think for myself and V.J., I think we’ll bounce back and knock down shots; that’s something we’ve been doing all season”. “Everybody that’s on the floor needs to be a receiver”.

And against an aggressive press defense like West Virginia’s, mental toughness can carry the day.

Princeton would build some momentum heading into the break based once again on their three point attack. Matt Farrell said he hasn’t been this emotional since high school and the locker room was dead silent.

Beachem had 6 rebounds, but the amount of rebounds he allowed Princeton to get while standing right under the hoop in great position to fight for them was frustrating. After that, though, Notre Dame has a severe dropoff in scoring to guard Rex Pflueger, who averages 4.8 points.

They also made a couple of big plays late, rose to the occasion before over 17,000 fans and made sure that the better team won in the end. “We’ve done a good job when we don’t have numbers in transition, we kind of back that thing out and make you guard us for a while”.

We’ll get back to that. They’ve seen opponents run a similar offensive system, pointing to Big 12 foe Iowa State.

Because of where Colson plays, expect Elijah Macon to get the first crack at the junior.
