Wisconsin upsets defending champion and top-seeded Villanova

Just staring into space as someone else danced around them.

Villanova normally plays four perimeter players around one big man, knowing that few college power forwards can score over the top of its two NBA-caliber wings, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges. ESPN had two flawless brackets left after that game, but by the end of the day, both had suffered a loss. “They can’t put that into a formula to come out with a percentage chance to win, and that’s the thing that we have”.

“Watching the NCAA tournament this year has been like rooting for the 1985 Bears, investing in Apple AAPL, -0.50% or betting on Tom Brady”, wrote Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel.

The Wisconsin Badgers play the Villanova Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament March Madness Round of 32 on Saturday, start time at 2:40 PM ET, at First Niagara Center, Buffalo, New York. He’s been shooting it lights out lately.

Villanova gets kudos for earning the No. 1 seed this season despite the heavy weight of expectation.

Less than a year after Koenig beat second-seeded Xavier in the second round of the tournament with a fall-away 3 at the buzzer, the senior guard was at it again. “It’s something that happened”.

You might even have your one shining moment.

“This is a great day for Gamecock basketball”, said Alex English, the Denver Nuggets great who scored 22 points in that long-ago SC win.

It is matchups and luck that ultimately determine the victor of this thing. Villanova (8-27) shot a dismal 29.6 per cent.

“THERE SHOULD be nothing negative about this tournament”, 16th year Villanova coach Jay Wright said of his team’s three second-round exits in the past four seasons. Rare is the team that wins a national title without a senior to show it the way: Ryan Arcidiacono and Daniel Ochefu in 2016, Quinn Cook in 2015, Peyton Siva in 2013, and even to an extent Darius Miller with Anthony Davis and Kentucky’s freshmen in 2012. A loss in the Elite Eight or the Final Four would have cushioned the blow a little better. “They’re a heck of a team”. “I’ve done everything you can do in a tournament except hold the trophy in April. The things that we’ve grown with”. We’re still trying to keep winning and get to our ultimate goal. We’re OK. Not right now, we’re not.

Have we mentioned that Hayes is really good? “But I thought it was a great job, great university, academically as well as athletically”. They see the sands going through the hourglass knowing there’s not much time left regardless of how we finish it out.

The magic is fragile and fickle and can vanish quicker than it came.

Unlike their first-round win over Mount St. Mary’s, the Wildcats didn’t waste any time getting their first field goal – Hart scored on their first possession of the game. Sparked by the guard play of Miles Wilson and Elijah Long, the Mountaineers had an 8-point lead early, and trailed by only 1 at the half before falling 76-56.

“I was more nervous that it would be a foul on Ethan because of the way that (Hart) was charging forward and obviously you can’t take a charge when you’re back-pedaling like that”, said Brown, who finished with 10 points.

“Everyone’s just telling me, ‘Go in there and make plays, ‘” Koenig said.

“It’s part of being a player”, Wright said of Jenkins.

If they don’t — well, nobody will say they didn’t see it coming.

SC coach Frank Martin had a message for long-suffering fans: It won’t take the Gamecocks 44 years to win another NCAA Tournament game.
