Wenger caused more speculation by saying after the game that he had already decided on his future, saying: “I know what I will do – you will know soon, very soon”.
But Wenger said that missing out on the Champions League for the first time in 20 years would not form the basis of his decision.
He was then asked to expand on that and why he thought that would be the case and said: “Because he told me”.
He refused to be drawn on his future prior to Saturday’s game. Arsenal are five points from the qualification places, having played a game less than fourth-placed Liverpool.
A Champions League position is usually seen as the minimal requirement for Arsenal’s directors but Wenger would not quantify what would be seen as a successful end to the current campaign.
West Brom defender Craig Dawson twice benefitted from abysmal set-piece defending either side of Hal Robson-Kanu punishing poor goalkeeping by David Ospina – on as a substitute for injured Arsenal number one Petr Cech.
“I don’t worry”, he said.
“If we don’t do it we have to live with the consequences”.
But what do you think? It’s more… I take a bigger perspective.
“We’ve got one loan player, Marc Wilson, to take the senior group up to 17 players”.
Arsenal’s performance bore the hallmarks of a regime in its death throes: mental slackness, physical weariness and the sense that the ennui is too overpowering to be held back.
“We are sorry to the fans because that’s not acceptable for Arsenal Football Club to lose the way we did”, Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain said. Indeed, while they had 77 per cent of possession, Arsenal were always second best.
Dawson capitalised on some very bad defending from the Gunners to head both of his goals from corners – the first to give the Baggies the lead, the second to seal their win.
Tony Pulis has only praise for his side securing 40 points so quickly this season, as well as their key win over Arsenal. “It depends if we can get a few more players”. “They’ve done fantastic these lot”.
