It is no secret that over one third of American adults are obese, and it’s also well known that being a fit individual indicates that you are a healthy individual. However, this knowledge has sparked a $20 billion diet industry that is constantly promoting super-foods, detoxes, and other forms of “pop science”, in order to get you go purchase their products. There is so much noise on this subject that becoming fit, something that is already a huge lifestyle change for many Americans, becomes incredibly stressful and confusing.
At the end of the day, becoming fit and healthy is a rather simple thing—on paper. The execution of this lifestyle change is much more difficult because you are not only creating new habits, but changing ingrained ones. What lifestyle changes am I speaking of? Adding exercise and a healthy diet to your life are changes that together become a combination that will get you fit and healthy over time.
About the Diet
When we talk about your diet, we are not speaking about some sort of popular or fad diet such as a juice cleanse. Those diets fail over time. Once you stop these fad diets, any changes that have happened to your body will be undone. There is no miracle food to make you lose weight and become skinny. So when we speak of, “diet”, we are alluding to the foods that you habitually consume.
The concept of a healthy diet is based on eating many types of nutritious foods. Your body needs a variety of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals to function at its best. Whether you choose to be an omnivore, vegan, or anything between your body needs those basic nutrients. For a healthy diet, one must also consider the food groups. This has been a subject of political controversy, and everyone seems to have a conflicting opinion on it. Books can and have been written on this subject, so you’ll have to find the balance in your diet that works best for your body. All I’ll say is that human beings seem to function best when they focus on eating vegetables and fruits.
Exercise is about being active. Exercise with fitness in mind works to better your body’s individual levels in the components of physical fitness. Working out to better your cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, body composition, muscular strength and endurance, will help you to sculpt a very fit body. Not only will you become stronger and have greater stamina, you will also find you have more energy, less injuries, and may even decrease common aches and pains. If you have not exercised in a while, start gently to help prevent injuries. A great first step in becoming active is to go on a walk.
Putting it Together
Your diet helps your body lose or gain weight. Exercise helps to reshape your body and make you strong. Putting those two things together ensures fitness.
