Most Common Exercise Injuries

Most Common Exercise Injuries

Nobody will dispute the advantages and benefits that you can gain from exercising. Working your body can make you feel better, breathe better, and much more. But if you overdo it, or if you don’t have a proper stretching routine before you exercise, you are making your body vulnerable to injury, sprains and other problems. Here are some of the most common exercise injuries that can be avoided by preparing your body beforehand.

Major Muscle Cramps

If you don’t warm up your body properly before a run, an important sporting event, or some other vigorous activity, there is a good chance you are going to experience muscle cramps. These are basically involuntary contractions in your muscles, and while they are generally felt in the calves, they can strike anywhere on your body. That’s why it is so important to make sure you are properly hydrated, and you stretch before any exercise. Also, make sure you maintain the recommended intake of potassium because a deficiency of this nutrient can also lead to major muscle cramping.

Strains or Sprains

There are minor differences between a muscle sprain and a muscle strain, but both are very painful and they are probably the most common exercise injuries that people experience. Sprains occur when the muscle is overstretched or when the ligament that supports certain joints in your body becomes torn. These exercise injuries are most common in the knees, wrists and ankles, but they can occur in any joint on the body.

On the other hand, a strain is less severe than a sprain because these occur when you simply stretch a tendon or a muscle more than you should. To recover from either of these, you should be sure to rest the affected area, apply ice right away, and take some medication to relieve the pain and inflammation. In more serious cases, you may need to see a doctor and go through some physical therapy to insure the affected area heals quickly and properly.

According to a recent issue of Harvard Men’s Health Watch, inflammation is one of the most common exercise injuries. This is a term that encompasses conditions like fasciitis, bursitis, and tendinitis because they are all caused by inflammation of some type, and they typically occur as a result of overly repetitive motions or overusing a certain joint or party of your body. These injuries can usually be treated with ice, thus reducing the pain and swelling in combination with anti-inflammatory medications.

Whenever you have an exercise injury, even if it is one of the most common exercise injuries, you should consult with a professional before continuing any type of treatment. You can also learn ways to prevent these problems from occurring, so you don’t have to take a break from your regular exercising routine.
